Developing a Perfect Free Throw Routine

Hey guys, Jordan Lawley here! Today, I want to share with you the most comprehensive drill workout series to help you develop the most effective free throw routine and shot. I've noticed that there is a lot of misinformation out there, so I want to provide you with all the information you need in one place. Let's get started and increase that free throw percentage!



Alignment

One of the most important concepts in developing a perfect free throw routine is alignment. When you step up to the free throw line, it's crucial to align yourself properly. Most free throw lines have a nail in the middle, and it's common advice to line up your toes with that nail. However, as a lefty, I prefer to line up a few inches to the side. Find what works best for you and make sure your shoulder is aligned with the middle of the rim. This will help you shoot straight and avoid missing left or right.

Visualization

Visualization is another important aspect of a successful free throw routine. Before each shot, take a moment to visualize a successful make. Some players, like Steve Nash, go through a routine where they actually release their wrist a few times. For me, simply looking at the basket and visualizing the ball going in is enough. Combine visualization with some breath work to enhance your focus and concentration.

Breath Control

Controlling your breathing is crucial, especially in high-pressure situations like free throws during a game. Take deep inhales and controlled exhales to calm your heart rate and clear your mind. Find a breathing technique that works for you. Some players take multiple long deep breaths, while others, like myself, prefer a single deep breath. The key is to find what helps you feel calm and focused before each shot.




Consistent Cadence

Maintaining a consistent cadence throughout your free throw routine is essential. From the moment you step into your free throw routine, make sure every rep has the same timing and rhythm. Whether it takes you five seconds or any other duration, stick to it consistently. This will help you develop muscle memory and improve your shooting consistency.

Rhythm

Rhythm plays a significant role in a successful free throw routine. Find a rhythm that works for you and incorporate it into your routine. Some players use a spin or a specific bounce to establish their rhythm. The goal is to tie your ball and hip rhythm together, making your shot seamless and fluid. Experiment with different techniques and find the rhythm that feels most comfortable and natural for you.

Target Alignment

Where you look when shooting a free throw can greatly impact your accuracy. Experiment with different target alignments to find what works best for you. Some players look at the front of the rim, while others prefer the back of the rim. Personally, I focus on the void between the front and back of the rim. By aiming for that space, I aim for a swish every time. Find the target alignment that helps you consistently hit your shots.

By following these instructions and incorporating them into your free throw routine, you can significantly improve your shooting percentage. Remember to practice consistently and hold yourself accountable. Aim for a free throw percentage above 90% and watch your skills soar. Good luck!
